This allows you to make a secure backup of your photos, in addition to Google's online storage.
Have you ever considered that all the photos you've collected over the years with your Android device are stored in your Google account? And that if something were to go wrong with your account, you would risk losing those photos irretrievably?
Backing up your Google Photos library to a hard drive
To do this, use Google's own tool, without any additional apps. Make sure you have an external hard drive with enough space (check your library size in Google Photos).
Preparation
- Connect your external hard drive to your computer (e.g., a USB stick or portable drive with at least as much space as your photos).
- Open a web browser and go to takeout.google.com. Log in with your Google account.
Step 1: Select what you want to export
Click “Deselect all” at the top. Only check “Google Photos.” Choose specific albums if you don't want everything, or leave it at “All photo albums selected” for the entire library. Click “Next step.”
Step 2: Set up the export
Choose “Email download link” as the delivery method. Stick with “One-time export” (or choose automatically every two months if you prefer). Select “.zip” as the file type and choose the size (e.g., 2GB for easy downloads, or 50GB for fewer files). Click “Create export.”
Step 3: Wait and download
Google prepares the archive – this can take hours or days, depending on the size of your collection. You will receive an email saying “Your Google data is ready to download” and links. Download the .zip files to your computer.
Step 4: Copy to your drive
Unzip the .zip files (right-click and select “Extract”). Copy the extracted folders (sorted by year and month, with photos and videos) to your external hard drive. Done! Test that everything is there by opening a few files.
Helpful tips
- Downloading larger files is easier in one go, but check your internet connection.
- Do this regularly for a fresh backup, and store the drive safely in a cool place. This will prevent you from losing your photos in the event of a Google problem.
